Session musician and guitarist Nick Tsang’ has embarked on a solo project called Amberlake. He kicked off the project with his single ‘Put Your Arms Around Me’ via TOO SHY RECORDS earlier this year and it is giving us that feel-good energy that an indie-pop song should have. This project was realized in the lockdown period of 2020, as many musicians were put in tight spots, Nick being one that could not perform with his regular set-up. We are not complaining one bit as Amberlake is sure to blow up with a collective stream of 1.1 million streams on Spotify to date.
We find out more about Amberlake below.
Please describe your sound for us.
Electronic guitar pop.
How did it all start for you?
I come from a touring background playing the guitar for artists such as Ed Sheeran, The Backstreet Boys and Charli XCX. When lockdown hit and touring work went out the window, I decided to start writing and released music every 3 weeks throughout 2020
Which three artists would you say made you want to create your own music?
Coldplay, One Republic, Bon Iver.
What is your go-to gear/equipment when creating?
My main tools are my laptop, Fender Strat guitar and M-Audio midi keyboard and my SM7B mic.
What are some of your key influences in your music? Whether it be the sound created by others, imagery, films or any kind of art form.
I love imagery. I’m especially moved by photographs. I combine that with my life experiences to start writing songs
What is one sub-genre you think doesn’t get the attention it deserves?
I’m loving a bit of grunge at the moment. Brings lots of happy times from the 90s!
Any new or upcoming artists on your radar?
The last few artists who have caught my ear are Oscar Scheller and ELLIANA. Definitely check them out.
What single night out has been the most memorable for you? As a performer? As an attendee?
I was lucky enough to play Coachella once with my old band Modestep which was insane. As an attendee, it has to be John Mayor at Wembley Arena. I had high expectations and he blew them out of the water!
What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?
I am loving writing and releasing music independently at the moment since it is so creatively fulfilling. On the side, I write and produce with other artists for their projects. Live wise, it will be a while before live shows go back to normal, but I shall be performing with Charlie Simpson in his band in October, so can’t wait for that!
Famous last words?
What have I got to lose?
