Q&A with quirky electronic pop music duo Evergreen

French music producers Michael Liot and Fabienne Débarre together known as the funky pop duo Evergreen have shared the latest single ‘Guess What’ via Moshi Moshi Records. We are hooked from the start with its honest lyrics and gentle groove throughout. Inspired by the awkwardness of stumbling upon your exes profile on social media, this band find the humour in this very human habit of orbiting on an ex’s status. ‘Guess What’ will feature on the duo’s EP Sign In, which is scheduled for release on the 15th of October via Moshi Moshi Records

We find out more about the duo Evergreen below.

Please describe your sound for us.

A bittersweet blend of groove-laden pop.

How did it all start for you?

A decade ago, in Paris, after a New Year’s resolution to make a band. From there we moved to London and have been in between the two cities ever since.

Which three artists would you say made you want to create your own music?

Air, Sufjan Stevens, Royksopp.

What is your go-to gear/equipment when creating?

A mix of Prophet V2, acoustic guitar and iPhone voice memos.

What are some of your key influences in your music? Whether it be the sound created by others, imagery, films or any kind of art form.

Organic hip-hop, jazz and funky sounds from around the world, 70s afro-Caribbean rhythms, 90s French electronica, and 00s R&B.

What is one sub-genre you think doesn’t get the attention it deserves?

Kuduro – an Angolan-via-Lisbon rhythm that’s been around for ages and is crossing over to international audiences.

Any new or upcoming artists on your radar?

Varnish la Piscine (Swiss beatmaker), Tessellate (Jamaican producer-musician), Gabriels (Californian soul-gospel band)

What single night out has been the most memorable for you? As a performer? As an attendee?

As performers – our first gig in Beirut back in 2014. The crowd was amazing and when the power suddenly went off, the gig continued in the audience. There was incredible energy at that show!

As an attendee – Cesaria Evora’s gig a few years ago at a festival. It was a peaceful summer evening, her music was so beautiful and she was incredibly moving.

What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

We have an EP coming out after the summer called Sign In, and more new music to come after that too!

Famous last words?

We love you Kylian Mbappé!
