Hiatus Kaiyote shares a new video for ‘Chivalry Is Not Dead,’ the broadcast premiere for which took place on Adult Swim over the weekend and is out online now. Co-directed by Lauren YS and Lester Chan with additional animation from David Osegueda, the new visuals are a deep dive into a colorful wormhole where the band is animated as various other-dimensional creatures. It’s a fitting visual for a track whose lyrics explore the bizarre mating rituals of leopard slugs (they turn fluorescent) and seahorses (they lock tails and dance).

Singer Nai Palm said “One of my most beloved dearest friends, Lauren YS, who is a superstar illustrator, has intricately brought to life the inner fabric of my brain’s innermost desires. I feel like we are two parts of the same coin. They cover the visuals (in collaboration with animator Lester Chan), and we cover the sonics.  We hope to take you on a sexy bizarre journey into the kinks of the animal kingdom. Love from us.”

Chivalry Is Not Dead’ comes from Hiatus Kaiyote’s critically acclaimed new album “Mood Valiant” out via Brainfeeder Records / Ninja Tune, which The New York Times described as “life-affirming, genre-defying cosmic soul”, the Guardian said was “Another giant leap for Hiatus Kaiyote…”, and Pitchfork praised as “the most vibrant they’ve ever sounded.” The new video also follows the band’s recent Tiny Desk concert, hailed by NPR as a “brilliant performance.”

Hiatus Kaiyote is Naomi “Nai Palm” Saalfield (guitar, vocals), Paul Bender (bass), Simon Mavin (keys), and Perrin Moss (drums). “Mood Valiant” came together after six years during which the band spent time touring, writing and recording, culminating in a 2019 trip to Rio de Janeiro that led them to work with legendary Brazilian arranger Arthur Verocai. Hiatus Kaiyote have been sampled on songs by The Carters (Beyonce & Jay-Z), Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, Chance The Rapper, and Drake—with whom Nai Palm also collaborated with on his Scorpion album. They’ve been praised by legends from Erykah Badu to Questlove to Prince, and other more recent supporters include Little Simz, Virgil Abloh, Doja Cat, Nubya Garcia, Loyle Carner, Kehlani, Tom Misch, Lianne La Havas and Bradley Zero. UK support includes Annie Mac, Clara Amfo, Gilles Peterson and Benji B on BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6 Music, where Iggy Pop has also supported, Jamz Supernova on 1Xtra, making the A list on BBC 6 Music and being featured on the cover of the Guardian Guide. In Europe, they have previously sold out Somerset House, Kentish Town Forum and the Shepherds Bush Empire in London, the Paradiso in Amsterdam, Sala Apolo in Barcelona, and played numerous festivals including Glastonbury, Dour and Dimensions.
