iloteca by Oriana Gidi Sets a New Standard for Experimental Songwriting

Mexican composer, producer, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Oriana Gidi returns with her second self-produced studio album, iloteca. At 23, Gidi has already built a multidisciplinary career across film, television, theatre and contemporary art. Raised in Mexico City, she studied music in California before focusing on film scoring in Paris. Her credits include co-scoring the HBO documentary MUXES with Leo Heiblum, performing with Patti Smith and Soundwalk Collective at the Centre Pompidou, and composing a 43-minute experimental piece for Leopoldo Gout’s exhibition at Povos Gallery in Chicago. She is currently developing an 80-minute score for Gout’s upcoming installation in New York. Alongside her work in film, Gidi has released an EP and her debut album Fairies Berries independently.

iloteca opens with ‘Frozen Spiderwebs’, establishing a delicate but intricate atmosphere through piano lines that mirror the vocal melody and arrangements shaped by compositional precision. The track sets an intimate but expansive tone. Lead single ‘Blue Bin Boy’ layers minimalist percussion with harmonies and melodic interplay, creating a flow that is both controlled and fluid. Gidi’s vocals serve as a precise and emotionally resonant anchor, drawing subtle parallels to Laura Marling and Frank Zappa while remaining distinctly her own. ‘Gambler’ introduces jazz-inflected rhythms and shifting time signatures, lending the album an unpredictable edge. ‘For Better’ starts as a restrained piano ballad, gradually unfolding into orchestral textures that underscore the album’s emotional breadth.

iloteca took shape over a year spent gathering lyric fragments, voice notes and sketches, evolving into a dense, organic sonic landscape. Field recordings and natural textures blend with vibrant percussion, layered harmonies and inventive melodic ideas. The album reflects Gidi’s instinctive approach to production, shaped in collaboration with close creative partners. It stands as a confident statement of her artistic identity, driven by curiosity, openness to new directions and a clear sense of creative enjoyment.
